Darren has a self-professed love for the flute since joining the Victoria School Concert Band some fourteen years ago. In the time since, he has performed in numerous different settings, music competitions, arts festivals and local concerts (solo artiste, duet, quartet, woodwind ensemble, wind band & orchestra) in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Austria and Hawaii. He most recently performed two movements of Claude Bolling’s Suite for Jazz Piano & Flute at the 2013 Johor Bahru Arts Festival as a guest flautist on invite by the Atelier Flute Ensemble. He currently holds a BSc(Economics) from the Singapore Management University as well as ABRSM Grade 8 certifications for both the flute and piano.
His passion for the instrument spurred him to begin teaching at Verve Music School in 2013. Darren adopts a performance-oriented and practical approach to teaching, with strong use of the piano as a teaching aid to augment the practical flute experience. He also makes it a point to accompany all his students on the piano for their graded exams, where required. He believes in cultivating interest in students through dialogue & the sharing of musical nuggets. With a good ear for music since he began formal training from the age of 5, Darren looks to nurture younger & brighter talents than himself to achieve their maximum potential.
As a testament to his commitment to the long-term, Darren’s first student has been with him as an eleven year old in 2013 till now, advancing from a beginner to an ABRSM Grade 5 standard. In between, she has achieved a Distinction in Grade 2 and is now an avid member of her secondary school’s symphonic band.
Darren is currently a freelance teacher with the Music Academy, while holding full-time positions as a management consultant and a tech entrepreneur.
